Located about 7 km east of Antsiranana (Diego-Suarez), on the road to Ramena, the Montagne des Français is an emblematic protected area in northern Madagascar. It is part of the Orangea complex, alongside the protected areas of Oronjia and Ambodivahibe.
Biodiversity and landscapes
This limestone massif is home to a dry deciduous forest characteristic of the region, with flora and fauna rich in endemic species. Notable plants include two species of baobabs: Adansonia suarezensis and Adansonia madagascariensis. Fauna includes various species of birds, reptiles and, occasionally, lemurs.

La Montagne des Français offers several hiking trails suitable for different levels:
- Circuit A: A climb offering a 360-degree panoramic view of iconic sites such as Pain de Sucre, Cap d’Ambre, the Mer d’Émeraude and the Trois Baies.

Historical and cultural heritage

The main access to the site is on the national road 59b, connecting Antsiranana to Ramena. It is recommended to bring suitable hiking shoes and sufficient water, as some climbs can be demanding.
